- W2049785964 abstract "One could not have missed the buzz surrounding microRNAs (miRNAs). The short (about 21 nucleotides) RNA molecules are involved in tumorigenesis, and are thought to hold great promise as diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers. miRNAs might even have therapeutic potential, either through regulating the expression of crucial genes, or by being targeted themselves with anti-miRNAs. In epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), miRNA-expression profiles have been described that are associated with different characteristics of ovarian cancer (eg, tumour subtype, stage, histological grade, prognosis, and therapy resistance). 1 van Jaarsveld MT Helleman J Berns EM Wiemer EA MicroRNAs in ovarian cancer biology and therapy resistance. Int J Biochem Cell Biol. 2010; 42: 1282-1290 Crossref PubMed Scopus (143) Google Scholar EOC is usually diagnosed in its more advanced stages, when the disease has already spread to the pelvic organs, the abdomen, or outside the peritoneal cavity. 5-year survival is only around 30% for patients with advanced stage disease (International Federation of Gynaecological Oncologists [FIGO] stage III–IV. Only a few cases (20%) are diagnosed at stage I, in which the cancer is still confined to the ovaries. Early detection (FIGO stage I) is associated with a 5-year survival of about 80%, although 20% of patients will relapse within this period. Reliable and validated serum biomarkers to detect ovarian cancer at an early stage are thus urgently needed, as are prognostic biomarkers for risk of recurrence, metastatic capability, and survival. Association between miR-200c and the survival of patients with stage I epithelial ovarian cancer: a retrospective study of two independent tumour tissue collectionsmiR-200c has potential as a predictor of survival, and is a biomarker of relapse, in stage I EOC.
