- W2049872022 abstract "Careless use of terminology is a difficulty that has long plagued our study of fossil hominoid forms (cf. Winner 1964). Several egregious examples of misuse of names have appeared only recently, such as Laughlin's use of the term apes to describe Paranthropus specimens from South Africa (1964: 1224). A still more recent case is seen in Agogino's comments (CA 5:384-85) on article, Prehistoric and Early Historic Culture Horizons and Traditions in South China (CA 5:359, 368-75), and reply to him (CA 5:399). Let us review 2nd instance briefly. Of the hominoid form Gigantopithecus, Agogino writes that probably this animal [is] a giant Australopithecine; however many once thought it was a hominid.. . He states that he understands Chang's position (also stated in Chang 1962a:749-60) in calling Gigantopithecus (Gigantanthropus) an Australopithecine. Agogino also inserts the remark that, Similar giants, Meganthropus paleojavanicus and the Swartkran mandible, are still considered hominid. As far as I know, there cannot be any giant Sterkfontein Swartkran mandible (sic!). And although Chang does not say so in his reply to Agogino, Chang did not, in fact, make the statement on Gigantopithecus attributed to him either in CA or in the Science article (1962). Whatever may be the positions of Chang and of Agogino on this, however, any contention that Gigantopithecus is a giant Australopithecine certainly must be regarded at present as extremely problematical. Finally, there is little doubt today that the Australopithecines are to be considered hominids (Clark 1964:123-73). Agogino, I believe, would concede error or misprint on at least 1 of these matters (personal communication, January 14, 1965), and Chang has informed me (by letter, February 2, 1965) 1 that he was misquoted. Agogino's major argument, namely that Gigantopithecus may have been a culture-carrying creature, remains unaffected by these comments; the relatively short canine teeth, as well as the indications of Gigantopithecine diet, do suggest the use of tools, albeit indirectly." @default.
