- W2049882205 abstract "Despite the very fact that aesthetics as a “science of sensual cognition” (Baumgarten) has centred around two categories rather than a single one, the scheme of dual aesthetic structures seems to be neglected in the history of criticism. This article will argue that the aesthetics from French classicism to German classical age (N. Boileau-Déspreaux, J. Dennis, J.J. Bodmer, J.J. Breitinger, F. Schiller) was organized by the dichotomy of beauty and sublimity on a very broad scale. The concept of sublimity comprises all those phenomena for which there has not been room in the monolithic concept of classicist beauty but which nevertheless claimed to be of some aesthetic value. Under the cover of the sublime, ‘non-beauty’as the terrific, the ugly and terrible gained access to the theory of arts troubling all kinds of attempting aesthetic education." @default.
