- W2049968002 abstract "Sherrington's life's work was to study the activity of the nervous system, activity which results in muscular movements, secretion of glands and contraction of smooth muscle. Of these, movement produced by contraction of striated muscle is finely graded, quick and readily recorded. In the earlier work published in Integrative Action of the Nervous System (1906)11, muscles were usually allowed to shorten so that they exerted a steady tension (isotonic conditions) and the shortening was recorded. The load on a muscle may vary, and it was found to be easier to compare reflex contractions - for example, the different reflex contractions of the same muscle produced by stimulation of different afferent nerves - by recording the tension produced at almost constant length (isometric conditions). Isometric myographs, which permitted less shortening of the muscle than that unavoidable in the stretching of the tendon, had to have their movement magnified either by a long lever, which gave an undesirably low natural period, or by a light beam and a small mirror on the myograph. The history of Sherrington's apparatus is very largely the history of the reliable recording of the contraction of powerful skeletal muscles." @default.
