- W2050699444 abstract "In three experiments using the conditioned suppression procedure with rats, we gave nonreinforced preexposures of a conditioned stimulus (CS) at a rate of two per day for 10 days. For different groups, the CS duration was 0, 1, 12, or 120 s in Experiments 1 and 2, or was 0, 1, 12, 120, or 720 s in Experiment 3. For all groups, the CS duration was 120 s during conditioning when it was paired twice a day with an electric grid shock unconditioned stimulus. In all three experiments, conditioning was most retarded in the group that received the longest duration of CS during preexposure and thus the greatest total exposure to the CS. The results supported the conclusion that latent inhibition (LI) increases as a function of CS duration/total exposure during preexposure when the number of preexposures and CS duration during conditioning are held constant. The results are shown to be inconsistent with most theories of LI but consistent with at least two other theoretical views." @default.
