- W2050791105 abstract "Abstract Fifty-four adult male rats were divided into nine groups of six animals each and starved for the following periods of time: 0, 3, 12, 24, 48, 72, 120, 168 and 216 hr. The following series of statements summarizes the effect of starvation on the submaxillary gland of these rats: (1) The glands lost weight in proportion to the loss of body weight. (2) This loss in weight was mainly due to the shrinkage in size of the tubular and acinar cells. (3) The reduction in the cell size of the tubules and acini progressed with increasing duration of starvation. (4) The diameter of the convoluted tubules likewise decreased with the duration of starvation and was related to the decreased size of the tubular cells. (5) The lines of regression for the increase in tubular and acinar cell density plotted as a function of the periods of starvation had the same slopes indicating that both cell types decreased in size at the same rate. (6) Acinar cells demonstrated more profound pathological changes than did tubular cells for equal periods of inanition. (7) The nuclei of tubular cells were more elongated than those of the acinar cells and starvation seemed to have no effect on the shape and size of the nuclei. (8) The value of pre-experimental fasting for the purpose of inducing synchronization of the secretory cells is questioned." @default.
