• W2051001044 abstract "The heteroflocculation of dispersion of large, negative polystyrene latex particles with small, positive polystyrene particles has been investigated as a function of surface coverage of both sets of particles by adsorbed poly(vinyl alcohol). Particle adsorption isotherms, sediment volume and rheological measurements were carried out as a function of surface coverage at various electrolyte (NaCl) concentrations. The results showed that the degree of flocculation increased with decreasing polymer adsorption. This was attributed to the combined action of two effects: (a) the increase in electrostatic attraction between the negative and positive particles, which is associated with the increased zeta potentials of both types of particle at lower levels of polymer adsorption; and (b) bridging flocculation by the polymer under conditions of incomplete coverage. This latter effect was more pronounced the higher the electrolyte concentration; in this case “floccules” of the small particles were adsorbed on the large ones and the sediment volume increased considerably. The results show that the extent and strength of flocculation can be controlled by varying the surface coverage by the polymer, in addition to varying the electrolyte concentration and the number of positive particles added to the dispersion." @default.
