• W2051216814 abstract "The effect of pentanol on the structure of entangled cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles in aqueous potassium bromide (KBr) solution has been investigated using flow birefringence and viscosity measurements. The experiments have been performed at constant surfactant and salt concentrations but with varying amounts of pentanol in the solution. Both the zero shear rate viscosity η0 and the flow birefringence Δn were found to increase when small amounts of pentanol were added to the solution up to a certain maximum value. This result can be explained by an initial increase in the size of the aggregates which are swollen by the alcohol. Further addition of alcohol beyond the maximum value leads to the breaking of these aggregates. This effect is illustrated by a large decrease in the two parameters cited above. In addition, the invariability of the extinction angle χ and the appearance of Newtonian behaviour in a wide range of shear, at the highest alcohol concentration, suggest the presence of less elongated particles in the solution. These data were interpreted in terms of a decrease in the curvature of the micellar surface and in the relaxation time derived from a study of the change in the extinction angle χ in relation to the structure of the entangled network." @default.
