Such a generalization provides an explicit insight into the principle of conventional UPb discordia dating. Its implications for both UPb geochronology and Pb isotopic geology are illustrated for whole-rock systems. When applying the three-dimensional data processing method to the experimentally determined results on the U and Pb concentrations and Pb isotopic composition of a given suite of cogenetic samples, one cannot only obtain a unique solution to timing of two episodic events (i.e. ages t1 and t2) directly, but also shed some light on the feature of the source region of initial Pb incorporated at time t1 and on the nature of U/Pb differentiation at the two episodic events. Common Pb for correction in the discordia dating is clarified to be responsible for the initial Pb at t1 rather than t2. Such a clarification would have an impact on the conventional UPb geochronology that makes assumptions about the isotopic composition of common Pb in calculating the discordias. The three-dimensional UPb method has advantages over the two-dimensional ones (UPb discordias or PbPb isochron) for treating the results of UPb isotopic measurements on a suite of cogenetic samples, because it takes into account three variables instead of two variables in data processing and thus enables straightforward calculation of ages responsible for two episodic events without a priori assumptions. This is a particular advantage for treating the UPb isotopic data of whole-rock samples and therefore for discovering possible low-temperature U/Pb differentiation responsible for terrane uplift." @default.
