- W2051250244 abstract "1.1. The formation of propionylcarnitine has been studied in isolated rat liver mitochondria incubated with l-[3H]carnitine.2.2. Mitochondria contain endogenous substrates for the formation of propionylcarnitine. The formation was increased by the addition of citrate, α-ketoglutarate or succinate. Labeled succinate was found not to be incorporated into the propionylcarnitine formed.3.3. The formation of propionylcarnitine was stimulated by α-ketobutyrate, propionate, valerate, α-metylbutyrate, α-aminobutyrate, valine and isoleucine. The formation of acetylcarnitine was inhibited by propionyl-CoA precursors.4.4. The addition of palmitylcarnitine decreased the synthesis of propionylcarnitine from α-ketobutyrate and from propionate.5.5. The incorporation of [2-14C]propionate into citric acid cycle intermediates and CO2 was measured. Addition of palmitylcarnitine decreased the incorporation of radioactivity into succinate compared to fumarate and malate, and increased the formation of 14CO2. Palmitylcarnitine had only a slight effect on the mitochondrial consumption of propionate. Although citrate increased the formation of propionylcarnitine, it decreased the conversion of propionate to citric acid cycle intermediates.6.6. It is suggested that the effects of citrate and of palmitylcarnitine on the formation of propionylcarnitine are mediated at least in part by their effects on the concentration of succinyl-CoA in the mitochondria." @default.
