- W2051286327 abstract "Although limited, available research suggests that women tend to benefit more than men to chronic pain treatment. However, there is limited research addressing sex differences in treatment outcomes in response to intensive multidisciplinary chronic pain treatment. The objective of the current study was to determine whether women and men responded differentially to a comprehensive pain rehabilitation program. To investigate this issue, we conducted a retrospective review of the records of more than 250 veterans who completed an intensive, interdisciplinary, residential, cognitive-behavioral chronic pain treatment program at a large southeastern Veterans Affairs medical center. Measures included the Pain Outcomes Questionnaire, the Chronic Pain Coping Inventory, the Coping Skills Questionnaire, the Fears and Avoidance Behaviors Questionnaire, and the Sleep Problems Questionnaire. All instruments were administered at program admission and discharge. We also examined staff predictions of patient-rated satisfaction and improvement. Responses on all measures were summarized and descriptive statistics were computed. One-way repeated measure ANCOVAs were conducted to examine the relationship between sex and outcomes. Analyses revealed main effects for sex on several key outcomes measures as well as main effects for time across all study measures. No interactions between time and group were observed indicating that both women and men benefited equally from interdisciplinary treatment. The implications and significance of these findings for multidisciplinary pain treatment will be discussed in the context of previous literature." @default.
