The experiments were performed to determnine extent to which an abundant supplv of water can replace known effect of auxin on growth. In view of importance of oxygen as a limiting factor in growth botl aerated and oxvgenated culture solutions were used. Certain steps in chain of events leading to tropistic movements in plants may be elucidated bvy data obtained in this studv. LITERATURE REVIEW.-Various approaches lhave been followed in an effort to determine mechatnism underlying plant movements and growth. Bottelier (1934, 1935) made an extensive study of effect of temperature, light and oxygen on protoplasmic streaming. Thimann and Sweeney (1937), corroborating Bottelier's work, found in addition an increase in rate of protoplasmic streaming of Avena coleoptiles which was brought about by indoleacetic acid in concentrations of 0.002 to 0.5 Img. per liter. This increase in rate was from 13 to 18 u per second and lasted 20 to 30 minutes. In a subsequent publication (1938, p. .160), these authors draw a parallel betweeni effect of auxin on streaming and its effect on growth which they believe indicates that the reactions giving rise to accelerated streaming and to growth are either saimie or are mutually interdependent. Commoner anid Thimann (1941) conclude that auxin catalyses a respiration system involving four-carbon acids, wlicih while accounting for only a snmall part of total respiration of coleoptile, controls a substantial part of growth process. Growth measurements (Sweeney and Thimann, 1942) showed that auxin concentrations whiclh increased rate of protoplasmic streaming gave a few per cent iiierease in growth of coleoptile sections only 3 IIII. long. Olson and du Buy (1940), corroborating unpublislhed work of Bottelier, reported that indoleacetic acid in concentrations from 0.001 to 10 mg. per liter produced no significant increase in rate of protoplasiimic streaming in Avena coleoptile.
