- W2051814530 abstract "Fifteen human heart valve allografts and 3 normal aortic valves were examined by scanning electron microscopy 1 day to 61 months after treatment with either beta propiolactone or an antibiotic solution before insertion. Allograft cusps had a smoothly undulating surface which corresponded with underlying bundles of fibres but lacked endothelial cells. Parts of the surface were covered by scattered mural deposits of varying thickness. The thicker deposits consisted of erythrocytes and leucocytes enmeshed in branching threads of fibrin while thinner deposits tended to be acellular and smooth-surfaced. Long-surviving allografts also showed discontinuous regions where there was a loss of cusp substance between fibre bundles. Such defects were sometimes partly filled with fibrin which infiltrated deeply into the cusp substance. Focal collections of erythrocytes and mononuclear cells were also present within these cusps and macrophages could be identified in lacunae. Some surface markings did not correspond to underlying structure, suggesting that the patchy infiltration of blood components into allograft cusps may be due to mechanical damage during their preparation or insertion." @default.
