- W2052184619 abstract "Abstract The number of licensed hunters in France is high compared with other countries and their activities create difficulties for the management and conservation of wildlife. Many species of small birds are killed for commercial gain (200–500,000 skylarks, 200–250,000 buntings and finches). Hunters are notoriously bad at identifying wild birds and frequently kill protected species. The hunting of turtle doves continues, although it is illegal, and at the same time many other birds are killed. Hunting pressure on wildfowl in wetlands is particularly heavy. Two hundred thousand hunters exploit only 600,000 hectares of wetlands. The shooting season is very long, lasting from the last Sunday in July until the second Sunday in the following March. Two million ducks are shot every year by French hunters. About 10,000,000 ducks are reared each year in northern Europe and the USSR, so that French hunters are taking much more than their share. In the cold winters of 1978/79 and 1979/80, large numbers of birds moved south into France and in spite of appeals for moderation there was a massive slaughter by hunters. Persistent overshooting prevents the recovery of small game populations such as partridges and pheasants. There is also an indirect effect of hunting practices on wildlife by the introduction of exotic species and the destruction of so-called pests. Hunting pressures on wildlife are more and more resented by public opinion, which is showing increasing sympathy for the aims of nature conservation." @default.
