- W2052205964 abstract "Fiber-optic evanescent wave sensor which consists of two D- fibers is analyzed by vectorial finite element method (VFEM) in this paper. Spurious solutions are eliminated out of the region of effective modes by the penalty variation principle. Utilizing mode coupling theory and choosing a large number of finite elements with a number of nodes N equals 1048, several important results for designing the fiber-optic evanescent wave in sensing region is obtained. The relative parameters, including the interval and distance of coupling region, the radii and refractive indices of the D-shape fibers, and the characteristics of sensing medium, are derived. Consequently, the contour map of those parameters is presented, and for a certain medium in sensing region, it is convenient to design an optimal contribution of those parameters.© (1996) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
