- W2052402652 abstract "Summary Patients leaving hospital with a discharge diagnosis of myocardial infarction or angina are prescribed a variety of cardiac medications. Nitrates are the most common group of drugs used in the treatment of angina pectoris and post-infarction angina. Sub-lingual glyceryl trinitrate (SL GTN) represents the first line of self-medication for cardiac patients and thus, the questions of education and practical use of this drug arise. This study was designed to assess patients' use of SL GTN as part of the treatment for angina and to discover how they gained this knowledge, prior to attedance at outpatient cardiac rehabilitation. The conveniene sample consisted of 50 successive patients with a diagnosis of myocardial infarction or angina. All subjects were attending their first visit to the clinic, prior to commencing the cardiac rehabilitation programme. A standard questionnaire was designed to collect the data. Of the 50 patients questioned, 35 (70%) complained of post discharge angina. Sub-analysis showed that more patients diagnosed with angina pectoris presented with post-discharge angina 26 (89.5%), than those post MI n9 (42.8%). Thirty-four per cent of this group did not receive a prescription for SL GTN upon discharge. Only 14 (40%) patients remember receiving any advice or information about SL GTN. Patients who had suffered angina while an in-patient were significantly more likely to receive a prescription for GTN pre-discharge 21 out of 22 (χ2=18.66, P" @default.
