- W2052490646 abstract "Excitatory amino acid (EAA) transmitters have multiple effects on CNS neurons by interacting with at least two categories of pharmacologically distinguishable postsynaptic receptors: N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) and non-NMDA receptors. Activation of non-NMDA receptors can indirectly activate voltage-dependent processes, whereas activation of NMDA-receptors can result in both direct and indirect activation of responses that are voltage sensitive and involve an increase in the intracellular Ca2+ concentration. Synaptic potentials mediated by non-NMDA receptors are fast, while those mediated by NMDA receptors are longer in duration. These temporal properties, taken in conjunction with the voltage sensitivity and permeability to Ca2+ of the NMDA receptor channel, suggest that synaptic inputs mediated by a combination of non-NMDA and NMDA receptors could have diverse effects on the activity of neurons and neuronal circuits." @default.
