- W2052497265 abstract "This analysis traces and characterizes broad developmental stages of medicaments in a historical perspective. It illuminates the relationship between the mythological remedies, the folk medicine, and scientifically developed medications in a societal pharmaceutical system. It attempts to classify such triad by stages of development, also pointing to the role occupied by marginal pharmaceutical doctrines and therapeutic sub-systems, constituting the conceptual framework of the analysis. There follows a corresponding socio-economic perspective whereby the medicaments are classified into three sub-systems, the illegal, the para-pharmaceutical, and ethical drugs. The corresponding social control mechanisms acting in each of the sub-systems are examined and documented. Pointing to possibilities of a socio-economic sub-optimization in drug application, it is inferred that in systems offering wider choices and alternatives, such may be easier attainable than in systems with centralized control; this especially in view of the fact that most of the modern scientific discoveries and achievements have been accomplished in the stimulating free-market environment. A typology classifying different provider systems of pharmaceuticals internationally concludes the analysis." @default.
