Tomostatics, the method to estimate static corrections based on near‐surface tomographic velocity models, has the advantage of utilizing existing first break data and providing reasonable velocity estimations in complex areas. The conventional grid or block tomographic methods with fixed‐in‐space model nodes or cells have difficulty to handle thickness variations and pinch‐outs of the weathering layer. This research aims to resolve this difficulty using a new deformable layer tomography (DLT) to directly invert for the position of velocity interfaces, such as the bottom geometry of the weathering layer.2D synthetic tests and preliminary analysis of a land 2D dataset indicate that the DLT method can reliably estimate the near‐surface velocities, especially when the velocity values of the major layers are known.
