- W2052816537 abstract "The effect of stocking density on growth and survival of Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana) juveniles was evaluated. P. leniusculus stage 2 juveniles (average weight 21.3±4.1 mg and average carapace length [CL] 5.2±0.3 mm) were stocked in 0.42 m2 tanks at 100, 200, 400 and 800 individuals/m2 and reared for 91 days at 18.4±0.4 °C. Final mean weight and mean length were found to decrease with increasing stocking densities. When doubling the stocking density the predicted reduction of the final wet weight is about 74 mg/individual (13–17%) and the corresponding decrease in carapace length was 0.51 mm (about 4%) over the experimental period. The survival of the animals was also affected by stocking density; the model suggests a decrease of 11% units in the survival when the stocking density is doubled. Furthermore, the proportion of lost chelipeds was found to be dependent on the stocking density. No density effects were found on the parameters describing the within tank length distributions of individual animals. These data suggest that the culture of P. leniusculus is feasible at the density groups tested but 200–400 juveniles/m2 is recommended for intensive juvenile culture in the first 3 months growing season." @default.
