- W2052846287 abstract "A linear growth response of cockroaches to dietary cholesterol was obtained in the range 0–0.05% of the diet, the latter figure being the “minimal optimal level” required. A systematic study was made of the effect of structural alterations in the cholesterol molecule as exemplified in 41 sterol derivatives. The number three hydroxyl group, either free or esterified, was essential, whereas the number five double bond was not required. Minor changes in the nucleus or the side chain had relatively lesser effects upon growth. The feeding of cholesteryl chloride had an adverse effect upon growth which was reversed in the presence of an excess of cholesterol. The data are discussed in relation to the proposal that the absorption of sterols in insects, as in vertebrates, must involve the participation of a cholesterol esterase." @default.
