- W2052892728 abstract "After Omar al- Bashir seized power in Sudan with a military coup in June 1989, Hassan al- Turabi was imprisoned in Kobar along with a number of prominent Sudanese political figures, including Sadig al- Mahdi and Othman al- Mirghani. Bashir vehemently denied that the National Islamic Front (NIF) had any involvement in the coup, and Turabi denied that he played any role in the new government. Nevertheless, Turabi, while still in prison, met Osama bin Laden and both men decided to relocate al Qaeda’s headquarters from Afghanistan to Sudan. Furthermore, in November 1989 Turabi helped in the creation of the International Organization of Muslim Women, thereby enforcing his views on women’s equality in Islam. 1 Although Turabi obviously remained influential, the divergence of Sudan’s foreign policy and Turabi’s tremendous influence in the Islamist movement as well as within the intelligence services was illustrated very early. In August 1990, Bashir assured Egypt and Saudi Arabia of his support in the war against Iraq. Meanwhile, Turabi declared jihad in support of Saddam Hussein and anticipated a series of Islamic revolutions across the Arab world. In this essay I seek to illustrate how the power struggle between Bashir and Turabi shaped Sudan’s foreign policy rationale from the late 1990s onward. I analyze the extent to which the interplay between the national interest and the radical interest led to interventions across borders and caused external involvement from neighboring states into Sudan’s internal affairs." @default.
