- W2053014180 abstract "690 The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a community-based physical activity campaign on the five stages of exercise behavior from the transtheoretical model of behavior change. Data for this study were collected from 690 participants, prior to the program beginning (T1), immediately upon conclusion of the eight-week program (T2), and three months after the program concluded (T3). A previously validated questionnaire to determine stages of change was administered at all three test periods. The majority of participants (86.7%) were already doing some physical activity prior to program initiation, with 46.6% exercising regularly. A significant stage movement was observed in nine of a possible 12 comparisons (Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Signed-Ranks, p <.004). From T1 to T2, 69.3% of the subjects advanced and 3.2% regressed; From T2 to T3, 19.4% advanced and 33.2% regressed; From T1 to T3, 62.3% remained stable, 26.3% advanced, and 11.2% regressed. Stages of change witnessed an overall positive transition during the program and may be an effective means of identifying changes that occur in similar programs. Community-wide exercise campaigns should benefit from incorporating strategies to attract larger percentage of the inactive population. Developing strategies to facilitate stage maintenance or continued advancement after program conclusion could lead to sustained changes in exercise behavior." @default.
