- W2053185114 abstract "When a heavy truck is fitted with an efficient muffler, the main sources of noise at low to moderate speeds are engine-radiated noise and fan noise. Probably the most economical method of reducing these latter sources is by complete enclosure of the engine and fan. The problems introduced are sound transmission through enclosure walls and cooling ducts, engine cooling, fire hazard, and accessibility. The transmission loss and noise reduction of a prototype enclosure measured in a laboratory experiment are given. Measurements are compared with theory. The design of the final enclosure for a diesel engine on an International Harvester truck is discussed. Practical problems encountered with this design and changes from the prototype design are reviewed.
