- W2053209641 abstract "The C-SALT (Caribbean-Sheets And Layers Transects) field program observed the scaled slope of the layer properties on the S-θ diagram to be strikingly constant at a value of 0.85 (in density units), which calls for an explanation. The observed properties along layers such as these are the result of the divergences of property fluxes. The obvious mixing process to consider in this thermohaline staircase is salt-fingering, but it is shown that the vertical divergence of salt-finger fluxes alone is not consistent with the observed 0.85 ratio. This is because the nonlinear nature of the equation of seawater requires the salt-finger flux ration to ovary too much in th vertical to achieve the 0.85 ratio of the flux divergencies. Therefore, in addition to salt-fingering, there must be some other process (or processes) at work in C-SALT, and it is shown that the interfacial mass flux through the C-SALT interfaces is vey likely the extra physical process. In the past, interfacial advection has been considered important only at very low temperatures across interfaces that have a stability ratio approaching unity (such as in the Weddell Sea). However, because vertical advection inherently causes water-mass conversion, irrespective of the vertical length scale associated with the divergence of the finger salt flux, the small interfacial advection is suprisingly important for water-mass conversion. The required interfacial; velocity is as much as a factor of two larger than that found by extrapolating the results of laboratory experiments to oceanic values of the interfacial salinity difference. It is shown that the buoyancy flux ratio must be close to 0.85 and certainly larger than 0.8. In this way, the simple association of the 0.85 lateral gradient ratio with the salt-finger flux ratio has been approximately vindicated, but for different reasons." @default.
