- W2053233406 abstract "Behavior therapy and psychotherapy have grown up separately and tend to have reciprocal advantages and shortcomings. The efficacy of behavior therapy has been validated scientifically, it is less long and costly, and it can often succeed where “insight” alone fails to eliminate symptoms or where verbal methods are clearly inapplicable. Yet behavior therapy alone is less effective in dealing with depression, acute psychoses, adolescent identity crises, and syndromes where guilt and anger are the predominant maladaptive affects. It is therefore useful to be able to combine the breadth of a dynamic psychotherapy approach with behavioral techniques. Behavioral techniques can be used within the context of interpersonal therapy, to eliminate or reduce recalcitrant symptoms, or to improve efficiency. Behavioral techniques are useful also in forcing the psychotherapist to sharpen his thinking about the mechanisms of the patient's symptom formation. Finally, the availability of techniques capable of eliminating a symptom may serve to catalyze psychotherapy either by opening the patient to new experiences or by highlighting resistances which might otherwise remain covert. Two clinical examples of the combined use of behavior therapy and psychotherapy are offered." @default.
