LG 11) roots were done using a macrophotographic technique. The growth rate of vertical roots in the dark was characterized by an endogenous rhythm which was reduced by white light and suppressed by gravity. Thus, when only light was applied, its inhibitory effect on growth was found to be less strong but of longer duration than that observed when only gravity acted. Moreover, growth inhibition due to gravity was obtained between 1 to 2 h after the gravistimulus and was enhanced by light. The nutation of vertical intact roots seems not to be sensitive to light whereas the gravicurvature was greater when light was applied at the beginning of the gravistimulus. When the roots, in vertical position, were placed in darkness after being illuminated a growth recovery was observed. If the light period preceded the gravireaction, the final angle of curvature did not change but kinetics of gravicurvature were different. In the dark, the growth recovery simultaneously occurred with a decrease of gravicurvature. For intact gravireacting roots, the minimum growth rate corresponds to the maximum rate of gravicurvature. A positive gravitropism is associated with an inhibition of root elongation whereas a negative gravitropism is associated with its stimulation. The effects of light, applied before or after a dark treatment, on vertical or horizontal roots, are discussed in terms of a balance between several endogenous regulators." @default.
