- W2053287761 abstract "Previous studies (Foster et al., 2007; Midgely et al., 2007; Poole et al., 2008) have consistently found non-significant mean differences between peak oxygen uptake (VO2) values obtained during incremental exercise and subsequent verification, constant load bouts. However, the efficacy of this verification phase testing procedure in older adults, a population that frequently fails to exhibit a VO2 plateau, is currently unknown. PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to test the utility of the verification testing procedure in confirming true VO2max in older adults completing maximal cycle ergometry. METHODS: Eighteen physically active men and women (age = 59.7 ± 6.3 yr, ht = 173.0 ± 8.8 cm, wt = 83.2 ± 16.4 kg, VO2max = 27.7 ± 5.0 mL/kg/min) completed incremental exercise, and returned 1 h after incremental exercise to complete a verification phase of constant load exercise at 105 % peak work rate. Coefficient of variation values for incremental exercise testing and the verification bout were 3.0 and 3.2%, respectively. RESULTS: VO2max was similar (p > 0.05) between incremental and verification bouts (2329 ± 762 mL/min vs. 2309 ± 760 mL/min). Maximal HR (165 ± 12 b/min vs. 164 ± 10 b/min) and respiratory exchange ratio (1.17 ± 0.05 vs. 1.19 ± 0.06) were also comparable (p > 0.05) between trials. The individual VO2 data for each test are presented in Figure 1.FIGURE 1: - Comparison of mean incremental test VO2max and verification test VO2max for all 18 sets. Individual VO2max data collected are represented by the line graph. Statistical analysis reveled similar VO2max values between the incremental and verification tests (P > 0.05).CONCLUSION: Findings support use of the verification procedure to confirm VO2max attainment in middle age and older adults completing incremental cycle ergometry. This is particularly relevant to interpretation of studies that have used repeated measurements of VO2max to establish a training effect or when VO2max is used for designing exercise prescriptions." @default.
