- W2053655184 abstract "This preliminary report indicates that a great deal of relevant information can be collected in an inexpensive straight-forward survey, provided that it is carefully planned, that the tests are relevant, that the sample is representative, that the questionnaires are sound, and that the analysis is appropriate to the questions asked. For the first time, we have identified those parts of Indonesia with high and low quality education; we have discovered that rural children learn much less than city children; we have yet to discover whether the reasons are to be found in the homes, or the schools, or in selective factors brought about by internal migration. We have discovered important differences between school types, religious groups, and other categories of pupils, and have shown that the lack of Bahasa Indonesia in the home is not a serious educational disadvantage. We have shown that younger children from professional homes, in urban areas, with well-to-do parents, do perform better in school, and the extent to which these factors are important. Thus we have paved the way for an analysis of the impact of teacher and school characteristics, with quality of home background held constant. Finally, we have produced some descriptive data on what the children have learned, and the conditions in which the teachers work. In the final report these findings will be elaborated upon, region by region, and the policy and curricular implications of the results will be spelled out. Also present norms for each region and the whole country will be presented, so that the tests can be used again on individuals and groups, and interpreted against regional and national standards." @default.
