- W2053835992 abstract "Using the well-defined and positively valued setting category of Swedish pastures, Hagerhall (J. Environ. Psychol. 21 (2001) 83) found that as rated typicality of a setting increased, mean preference also increased, but the variance-of-preference ratings decreased. The decrease in variance was attributed to greater consensus associated with more typical settings. We investigated both a positively valued setting category (parks) and a negatively valued category (alleys). For parks, we replicated Hagerhall's pattern of results except that the negative relation between variance of preference and mean typicality disappeared after controlling statistically for mean preference. For alleys, we obtained the expected negative relation between mean preference and typicality, but contrary to expectation, the variance-of-preference ratings increased with rated typicality after controlling for mean preference. We conclude that mean preference increases with typicality for positively valued setting categories and decreases with typicality for negatively valued setting categories. Moreover, greater typicality does not necessarily lead to increased consensus and reduced variance in preference ratings for all setting categories." @default.
