- W2053883615 abstract "Abstract The involvement of adrenergic mechanisms for the production of hypothermic ventricular fibrillation was studied in isolated perfused cat hearts. Cooling hearts from 37°C to 16°C during 45 minutes did not result in the development of ventricular fibrillation, provided the flow rate of the perfusion medium was reduced parallel to the reduction in temperature and heart rate. The cardiac activity was completely rhythmic during the cooling procedure. Even though the hearts were maintained for a further 30 min at 16°C, cardiac noradrenaline was not lowered compared with hearts perfused for 75 min at normothermia. Thus, an intact neuron chain to the heart is indispensable for a release of noradrenaline by cooling and for the development of hypothermic ventricular fibrillation. When tested at 21°C, adrenaline, noradrenaline, isoprenaline, tyramine, and nicotine constantly produced ventricular fibrillation when given in doses that at 37° C produced only positive inotropic and chronotropic responses. The fibrillatory action of these agonists was blocked by β-blocking agents (INPEA and propranolol), and the effect of nicotine was counteracted by hexamethonium. Acetylcholine did not produce ventricular fibrillation unless it was given to hearts pretreated with atropine. The experiments offer further evidence in favour of the hypothesis that adrenergic mechanisms, notably at the level of the cardiac sympathetic nerves, constitute an important link in the production of hypothermic ventricular fibrillation." @default.
