• W2053996858 abstract "This paper suggests a new conceptual framework for understanding and assessing negatively valenced attitudes towards gay men and lesbians. It distinguishes between conceiving of gay men and lesbians as individuals marked by isolated and sinful behavior and as members of a group marked illegitimate and secret power. The paper provides a first step in measuring this phenomenon. I fielded original survey questions to form a new anti-gay attitude scale that hinges on this group versus individual distinction. I then use exploratory factor analysis to evaluate the appropriateness of scaling these items together. I model the demographic and socio-economic variables associated with respondents’ scale scores and model policy preference for same-sex marriage using the scale as the predictor of interest. Finally, I compare the anti-gay attitude scale with pre-existing scales that measure attitudes towards other minority groups. While I find mixed support for the individual versus group factor in the scale, I demonstrate that modeling same-sex marriage policy preference with my scale fits the data better and has more predictive power than standard individual-level models in political science." @default.
