The kinetics of various transport systems across cell membranes involving chemical reactions of the transported substrate in the membrane (with and without carrier molecules) have been worked out for the steady state. 2. It is shown that of four kinetical types which were termed D, Z1, Z2 and E anyone may represent the kinetical type of the transport either generally or under particular conditions as regards limiting factors. 3. In these types the dependence of the rate of transport v on the substrate concentrations (S)I and (S)II takes the following forms (KD, Kz1, Kz2 and KE being constants): Type D v = KD[(S)I − (S)II]Type Z1 v = Kz1(S)I − (S)II(S)IType Z2 v = Kz2(S)I − (S)II(S)IIType E v = KE(S)I − (S)II(S)I(S)II = KE[1(S)II − 1(S)I]. D is the type known from diffusion transports. In the types Z1 and E, the rate v becomes constant for high substrate concentration. E is characterized by a dependence of the saturation level on the value of (S)II(1vmax proportional to (S)II). Furthermore various mixed types may occur. 4. It is shown that a) the mere participation of a chemical reaction does not necessarily introduce new types of kinetics. b) with low substrate concentrations all systems follow the type D. c) the other types may result from the participation of carrier or enzyme molecules if at least one of them is saturated. d) the type E, which may be considered as saturation type of higher order, is bound to the condition that at least two sites (on different surfaces of the membrane) are saturated with S. 5. Kinetical asymmetry, i.e. different rates of transport in the two opposite directions, when the substrate concentrations are exchanged, may under certain restricted conditions result from differences in the corresponding velocity constants or enzyme concentrations. 6. The mechanism of coupling to energy-supplying reactions, resulting in accumulation, has been considered from analogous points of view." @default.
