- W2054103705 abstract "In a recent study published in the Journal of Surgical Research, Matsushima et al. [ [1] Matsushima K. Kulaylat A.N. Won E.J. Stokes A.L. Schaefer E.W. Frankel H.L. Variation in the management of adolescent patients with blunt abdominal solid organ injury between adult versus pediatric trauma centers: an analysis of a statewide trauma database. J Surg Res. 2013; 183: 808 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (31) Google Scholar ] presented the results of their retrospective clinical study, which showed a variation in the management of adolescent blunt abdominal solid organ injury (SOI) between adult trauma centers (ATC) and pediatric trauma centers (PTC). They reported that, regardless of injury grade, surgical procedures involving the spleen and liver were performed more often at ATC than at PTC. This is a well-written manuscript, providing interesting information regarding the differences in the management of adolescent blunt abdominal SOI between ATC and PTC. Dr Matsushima and his colleagues are to be applauded for their research because they are the first to report the difference in treating adolescent SOI between adult and pediatric surgeons. Adolescence is the transition stage between childhood and adulthood. An injured adolescent can be admitted to an ATC because of physical resemblance to an adult, or to a PTC just because of age. However, adolescents are neither just little adults nor just large children. Variation in the management of adolescent patients with blunt abdominal solid organ injury between adult versus pediatric trauma centers: an analysis of a statewide trauma databaseJournal of Surgical ResearchVol. 183Issue 2PreviewOptimal management of adolescent trauma patients with blunt abdominal solid organ injury (SOI) remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to identify management differences in adolescents with SOI treated at adult trauma centers (ATC) versus pediatric trauma centers (PTC). We hypothesized that adolescents with SOI would undergo different treatment at ATC and PTC. Full-Text PDF" @default.
