- W2054124581 abstract "The decay characteristics of the long-lived negative ion formed by impact of 2 eV electrons on p-benzoquinone, first reported by Christophorou et al. are investigated by time-resolved electron-energy-loss spectroscopy. The electron-transmission spectrum is also given. The existence of the metastable anion is confirmed. The decay curve of the negative ion formed by capture of 2 eV electrons has two components, first with τ < 0.07 μs (instrumental time resolution) and probably with τ < f10 fs (deduced from the absence of structure in transmission and vibrational excitation spectra), followed by a decay with τ > 1 μs. The fast autodetachment leads primarily to excitation of discrete vibrational levels with low vibrational quantum number. In contrast, after the slow autodetachment nearly all of the incident electron energy is transferred to nuclear excitation of the target molecule. The observations are understood in terms of two rapid competing processes following the capture of a 2 eV electron. These are a rapid autodetachment on the 1–10 fs timescale and a rapid radiationless transition leading to a vibrationally excited ground-state ion which then undergoes a slow vibrational autodetachment." @default.
