- W2054268269 abstract "The finite–element method is the most widely used computer–based modelling technique for investigating the detail of metal forming operations, particularly within the deformation zone. It is used for mechanical, thermal and microstructural events. The demands for greater detail keep pace with improvements in computer power, such that the technique remains an off–line tool, too slow for on–line use. Indeed, the complexity of the modelling requires significant simplifying assumptions to be made. Despite this, the finite–element method is often capable of answers that are potentially more accurate than can be achieved with the input data available. Considerable effort is now going on to provide better descriptions of constitutive behaviour, friction and heat transfer. This paper will consider these issues in assessing the current status of finite–element modelling as applied to the thermomechanical processing of metals." @default.
