- W2054278664 abstract "We report further accurate measurements of fine structure in D, F, and G Rydberg states of /sup 4/He obtained using a microwave-optical resonance method and electron-bombardment excitation. Single-quantum electric-dipole transitions 10D/sub 2/-10 /sup 1//sup ,//sup 3/F/sub 3/, 11 /sup 1/D/sub 2/-11 /sup 1//sup ,//sup 3/F/sub 3/, 12 /sup 3/D/sub J/-12 /sup 1//sup ,//sup 3/F/sub J prime/, and 6 /sup 1/F/sub 3/-6 /sup 1/G/sub 4/ and two-quantum transitions D/sub 2/-7 /sup 1//sup ,//sup 3/G/sub 4/, 9 /sup 1/D/sub 2/-9 /sup 1//sup ,//sup 3/G/sub 4/, 10 /sup 3/D/sub J/-10 /sup 1//sup ,//sup 3/G/sub J prime/, and 16 /sup 1/P-16 /sup 1//sup ,//sup 3/F/sub 3/ were observed. Both electrostatic and relativistic fine-structure intervals were determined with uncertainties less than 1 MHz and are compared with theoretical results. The data constitute the first measurements of G-state fine structure in helium. Series formulas incorporating all our measurements are given for serveral resonance series, and we show that the entire series n /sup 1/F/sub 3/-n /sup 1/G/sub 4/ can be predicted to within 75 ppm.
