- W2054558052 abstract "Geriatric oncology (or gero-oncology) has become an important sub-discipline in medicine due to the rapidly growing elderly population with cancer diagnoses. Pain is a critical health problem in gero-oncology and proper assessment is an important first step in the treatment of pain. This study aims to develop a multidimensional pain item bank to provide a comprehensive view of the pain experience and measurement in gero-oncology. A PubMed search was conducted to identify relevant pain instruments. Eighteen instruments were selected based on their scope and frequency of use, resulting in an initial item bank with 434 items. Items were coded and grouped according to 70 themes through our qualitative item coding analysis (QICA) method, which utilized a database program to identify common themes. Items were organized by themes with common trends identified and theme frequencies measured. Lexile analysis was performed to determine the reading level of each item and some items were revised to improve readability. To validate the utility of the QICA method with existing coding methods, a comparison was conducted using some sample instruments. The coding process was similar to that used in Atlas. ti. Themes were coded equally well by both methods. The advantages of the QICA method included its ability to provide a modifiable visual and printable representation of coding that compared the frequency of themes in tabular form. Using the identified themes from qualitative analyses and Lexile analysis, original and revised items were added to the item bank. A clinically relevant and dynamic pain assessment tool can be derived from the item bank that is directed toward the specific needs of diverse elderly cancer patients for better pain management.
