- W2054767616 abstract "Though deep sea sediments are frequently enriched in certain trace elements compared with their shallow water equivalents, high contents of these elements in sedimentary rocks are not necessarily indicative of accumulation under deep water. Consideration of the influence of pressure changes on equilibrium relationships in processes of trace element incorporation in sediments suggests that, over the pressure range corresponding to depth variation in the present oceans, the effect of pressure is small and inadequate to explain the geochemical differences between deep water and shallow water sediments. Other factors, not necessarily a direct and inevitable consequence of depth of water, must be responsible for these differences. It is considered unlikely that trace element relationships could be used as definite depth indicators, though the total trace element population of a sedimentary rock may suggest that consideration should be given to possible accumulation of the original sediment under deep water." @default.
