Conscious adolescent baboons (Papio papio) have been given intravenous injections of atropine or eserine and the effects on the EEG, on behaviour, and on myoclonic responses to intermittent light stimulation (ILS) have been observed. 2. The classical alerting effects produced by eserine (0.2 mg/kg) were maximal 5–10 min after injection and were accompanied by a sustained, high voltage fronto-Rolandic rhythm at 9–11 c/sec, resembling human mu rhythm in morphology and reactivity. 3. After atropine (2 or 5 mg/kg), periods of agitation and of sedation were seen. The sedation was most marked 20–60 min after injection. During this period an enhancement of EEG paroxysmal features was seen. Spikes and polyspikes and waves occurred predominantly in the fronto-Rolandic cortex, but also more diffusely. 4. Beginning within 1–3 min of the injection of atropine and continuing for several hours, there was marked enhancement of the amplitude and frequency of lambda waves, which appeared in sustained bursts during the phases of agitation. Such sustained bursts of lambda waves were not seen after intravenous methylatropine (4–6 mg/kg) or intraocular homatropine. 5. After atropine (0.25–5.0 mg/kg) and after eserine (0.05–0.3 mg/kg), baboons with high, low or variable photosensitivity continued to display their characteristic responses to ILS when tested at the times of the maximal EEG drug effects. Neither drug made insensitive animals sensitive or led to ILS-induced seizures in photosensitive animals. 6. It is concluded that the paroxysmal motor responses of baboons to ILS are not determined by the degree of activity in cholinergic non-specific cortical afferent or cortico-cortical cholinergic systems. 1. Des injections intraveineuses d'atropine et d'ésérine sont pratiquées chez des babouins (Papio papio) adolescent. Leurs effets sont analysés non seulement sur l'EEG et le comportement mais encore sur les réponses paroxystiques EEG et cliniques induites par la stimulation lumineuse intermittente (SLI). 2. Le comportement d'alerte produit par l'ésérine (0,2 mg/kg) prédomine 5–10 min après l'injection; simultanément, apparaissent des activités rythmiques fronto-Rolandiques, de grande amplitude, continues, à 9–11 c/sec, analogues du point de vue de leur morphologie et de leur réactivité au rhythme mu de l'homme. 3. Après atropine (2 ou 5 mg/kg), des périodes d'agitation et de sédation se succèdent. La sédation est plus marquée 20–60 min après l'injection. Au cours de cette période, une augmentation des activités paroxystiques EEG est observée. Les décharges de pointes-ondes et de polypointes-ondes prédominent dans les régions fronto-Rolandiques mais diffusent souvent à l'ensemble du cortex. 4. Dès les trois premières minutes qui suivent l'injection d'atropine et pendant plusieurs heures, on note une importante augmentation de l'amplitude et de la fréquence des ondes lambda, qui surviennent pendant les périodes d'agitation en longues bouffées. Ce type de modification des ondes lambda n'est retrouvé ni après injection intraveineuse de méthylatropine (4–6 mg/kg) ni après installation d'homatropine dans les yeux. 5. Après atropine (0,25–5.0 mg/kg) ou ésérine (0,05–0,3 mg/kg), les babouins continuent à présenter le même type de réponse à la SLI à l'acmé de la drogue, quel que soit leur type de photosensibilité antérieure, important, variable, ou nul. Ces deux drogues ne provoquent ni une élévation du seuil de photosensibilité chez les animaux photosensibles (elles ne facilitent pas l'apparition des décharges critiques auto-entre-tenues se poursuivant après la SLI) ni une diminution du seuil chez les animaux non photosensibles. 6. En conclusion, ces résultants font apparaître que les réponses motrices paroxystiques des Papio papio à la SLI ne sont pas déterminées par le degré d'activité des afférences corticales cholinergiques non spécifiques ou des systèmes cholinergiques cortico-corticaux." @default.
