- W2055200103 abstract "Incorporation of tritiated thymidine, uridine and adenine into deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA) of spermatogenic cells of sixth instar and adult grasshoppers (Melanoplus differentinlis) was studied by means of autoradiography. The length of the spermatogonial cell cycle is 28 hr; DNA synthesis occupies 12 hr of this cycle. DNA synthesis immediately prior to meiosis precedes the growth period of the spermatocytes and represents final synthesis of DNA in spermatogenesis. Total time for the whole of spermatogenesis is approximately 28 days. Of this time, the seven spermatogonial divisions take 8 to 9 days, premeiotic DNA synthesis and meiosis 9 to 10 days and spermiogenesis 10 days. Adenine continues to be incorporated by spermatogonial cysts up to 48 hr after injection whereas thymidine is incorporated for only a short time. The labeling pattern indicates that some of the adenine is incorporated into an intermediate precursor of DNA, a low molecular weight RNA being the most likely possibility. A high rate of RNA synthesis takes place in the apical cell. RNA synthesis in spermatogonial cells occurs during the entire cell cycle except during the time of maximum contraction of the chromosomes. Considerable RNA synthesis occurs in prophase of meiosis and ceases during diakinesis. Synthesis of RNA resumes after the second meiotic division and continues in the early spermatid until condensation of chromatin occurs." @default.
