- W2055271011 abstract "Recent attempts to lower the temperature of the superconducting magnets in Fermilab's high energy particle accelerator, the Tevatron, and push Fermilab's accelerator complex to somewhat higher energy have motivated investigations into the temperature profiles of the flow around the Tevatron dipole magnet coil. A specially instrumented magnet with thermometry in the single-phase and two-phase helium passages has been tested at the Magnet Test Facility at Fermilab. Measurements show that two-phase flow is separated with a low liquid level in the two-phase shell; heat transfer to the two-phase is poor. Single-phase flow is dramatically stratified. Values of AT of more than 100 mK are typical across the magnet coil, and the top of the coil is more than 300 mK warmer than the two-phase helium. A ramp of current produces a heat pulse which reaches the end of the magnet about 30 s later, and could account for some 'flattop quenches' Published by Elsevier Science Ltd." @default.
