- W2055356486 abstract "Purpose of the study: To evaluate the effectiveness of the EPILS Course on knowledge, practical performance and self-efficiency of health care professionals, in the management of critically ill children. Materials and methods: These are preliminary results of a multicentre prospective study analyzing data of EPILS Italian courses, from December 2009 to June 2010. Knowledge improvement was evaluated comparing results of a standard pre- and post-course multiple-choice questions test (MCQ). Candidate's self-efficiency and fear in management of the critically ill child, cooperation between colleagues, availability of medical supplies and technological instruments adequate to the child in their unit was evaluated by a pre- and post-course questionnaire (six questions on 5-point Likert scale) regarding the psychological impact related to a paediatric case of severe shock. Practical performance was measured as the percentage of candidates passing the course by means of continuous evaluation. Data were expressed as average and standard deviation. Statistical analysis was performed by Student's t-test. Results: Two hundred and eight health care professionals (96 physicians, 112 nurses, two paramedics, 1 midwife) from 18 EPILS courses were included in the study. Two hundred and seven candidates (99.5%) successfully passed the course. A significant improvement in knowledge was shown in post-MCQ test compared with pre-MCQ test (P < 0.000001). Conclusions: Our preliminary results suggest that EPILS Courses may be effective in improving theoretical and practical learning, both objectively and as perceived by participants. Further evaluations are warranted to better clarify the impact of EPILS courses on clinical practice and long term knowledge and skills retention, in addition to long term maintenance of participants’ self-efficiency perception." @default.
