- W2055372008 abstract "Study Objectives: Describe demographic and attitudinal characteristics of patients seeking dental care in the ED, their access to dental care, general dental health maintenance, and willingness to pay for care. Methods: A prospective convenience sample of patients with dental complaints presenting to a university-affiliated teaching hospital between October 2010 and November 2011. Surveys gathered demographic data, general dental health maintenance information, as well as prior use of the ED for dental complaints, and willingness to pay for walk-in dental care if it were available. Results: Seventy-eight surveys were completed with a mean age of 33.8 years (SD 11.6y). 63 % female; 62% white; 28% black. The majority did not visit for a trauma related complaint, are unemployed, do not have dental insurance or a regular dentist, do not see a dentist annually or floss daily. However, 92% brush daily, and 85% planned to seek follow-up care after their visit. 52% have been to the ED before for a dental complaint. 69% would have chosen a free or low cost clinic if available, 91% felt that a walk-in dental clinic would be useful in the community, and 50% would be willing to pay up to $25.00 out of pocket to receive that care. Women were more likely to floss daily, those with insurance were more likely to have a dentist and visit annually (p<0.05). Employment was not a predictor of insurance status. Conclusion: The majority of patients that visit the ED for dental complaints do so for non-trauma related complaints, not have access to other care, dental insurance, or a job. The vast majority brush their teeth daily, plan to seek follow-up care, and would welcome a walk-in dental clinic in the community.
