- W2055378077 abstract "Abstract An artificial intelligence knowledge base (expert system) has been developed to assist oilfield personnel in analyzing for bacterial involvement in water-related field problems. The expert system also advises on the probability that bacterial contamination is involved in corrosion and can make biocide recommendations for several common bacteria-mediated field problems. The new expert system, Oilfield Microbiology Assistance System (OMAS), is a floppy-disc-based computer program that runs on most IBM and IBM-compatible personal computers. On-line help is included with the program diskette. The expert system was developed using INSIGHT 2+ software and is distributed to company personnel in a read-only format. The expert system covers situations encountered in the oilfield environment but can be tailored for other specific applications. Introduction Bacteria commonly found in oilfield systems are capable of causing serious operational problems. However, bacteria presence alone does not prove bacterial involvement in an operational problem. Proper field problem evaluation will allow appropriate corrective measures to be performed in a timely fashion and at reduced costs. Field experience has shown that an unique profile often exists for bacteria-caused field problems. While this profile is not absolute, a good case for bacterial involvement can be built if enough field data is available. Unfortunately, bacterial problem evaluation is a specialized task not normally within the expertise of field personnel. However, since evaluation of such field problems often involves repetitive, flow diagram-like procedures, a computer is an ideal processing tool. The missing element has -been the means to connect three independent worker groups together;computer programmersmicrobiologists, andfield operatives. Recent developments in artificial intelligence systems have allowed technical experts (but noncomputer experts. i.e., microbiologists) to develop computer programs for use by people who are neither computer nor technical experts. As a result, the field operative now has access to some powerful analytical tools. The Oilfield Microbiology Assistance System is an example of one such system. SOFTWARE AND DOCUMENTATION The OMAS expert system runs on IBM and IBM-compatible Personal computers which have at least 256K bytes of RAM. The expert system can be run from a floppy disk or can be loaded onto a hard disk for faster processing. The single diskette expert system includes the rule base, an inference engine, error message files, and on-line help. The step-by-step procedure for loading and using this knowledge base is provided in Appendix A. Discussion Expert System Benefits The Oilfield Microbiology Assistance allows field personnel to evaluate for the influence of bacteria on their oilfield problems. Proper evaluation of such field problems should (1) promote quicker response' to field problems, (2) reduce the incidence of unnecessary remedial work, (3) help eliminate inappropriate chemical application, nd (4) allow the prediction of operational effects that would be caused by allowing input parameters to change. As a result, economic benefits could be considerable. Expert System Description The Oilfield Microbiology Assistance System (OMAS) is a computer program that takes user input about field problems and attempts to determine if bacteria are actively involved.
