- W2055441484 abstract "China, Canada and China were joined in a common enthusiasm for an aphrodisiac ginseng famous as a tonic and restorative, used to bolster sagging bodies and minds. Ginseng (panax schiseng) in the wild grew in shady, wooded areas, between the latitudes of 39 o and 47 o in northeast Asia. The Chinese treasured it as a panacea, attributing remarkable powers to it. It was variously known by such terms as 'spirit of the earth,' 'fat of the sea,' and 'the remedy that dispenses immortality.' The Chinese characters for it, jen shen, can mean 'the essense of man,' but there are other meanings. The most valued part of the ginseng plant was its root, resembling, in the mature plant, the thighs of a man, often with genitals. It was used either alone or with other medicine and was regarded as one of the most potent 'hot' medicines. It was prescribed for the sexually impotent and was widely believed to stimulate and to prolong virility. Canadian, or North American, ginseng (panax quinquefoli. um), originally found from Montreal to the us gulf coast, closely resembled the Chinese, but was regarded as inferior in medicinal properties by Chinese and Europeans alike. Claims were made in the eighteenth century, however, that Canadian ginseng was as good as the Chinese, or even better?
