- W2055463654 abstract "There is adult dimorphism in populations of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) with an active form which is induced by the crowding of larval populations. Whilst investigating the appearance of the active form at high larval density, the changes of temperature in heaps of beans of different volumes and with different larval densities were observed. In all heaps of beans, the temperature began to rise from about the tenth day after the oviposition and reached its highest level at the fifteenth day, falling thereafter. The higher the larval density and the greater the volume of beans, the higher was the rise of temperature. The active form appeared from the heaps of beans with a high temperature. When the rearing temperature was kept high or changed to a high temperature at a certain definite larval stage, the percentage of the active form in the emerging adults was high, even in the absence of crowding. The ninth day after the oviposition at 30°C, which corresponds to about the second instar stage, was the critical stage most susceptible to heat. This stage is not the one producing heat most conspicuously. Therefore, when the temperature in beans reached its peak, it was the larvae of most backwardness in development or of having developed from eggs deposited late that were most susceptible to the influence of heat and developed into the active form." @default.
