- W2055503965 abstract "The types of peripheral neuropathies associated with solitary and multiple myeloma include both generalised indolent and severe polyneuropathies and compression of isolated nerves as in the carpal tunnel syndrome. These disorders are exemplified by detailed clinical and autopsy reports of 4 patients with multiple myeloma. Three of them had generalised peripheral neuropathies, and 1 had a bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome. Neuropathological studies, including the examination of single nerve fibres, showed extensive endoneurial fibrosis, active and healing Wallerian-type total nerve fibre degeneration and healing and segmental de- and re-myelination. Uniquely, paraamyloid was found around small blood vessels in major nerve trunks of one patient, and there was similar material in the skeletal muscles of another. No association was found between the neuropathy, the rare osteosclerotic lesions of myelomatosis or the occurrence of renal failure. The clinical and pathological features of myelomatous neuropathy are reviewed and are compared with the diverse neuropathies associated with carcinomas and reticuloses. These syndromes resemble one another and it seems likely that they have similar aetiologies, albeit of an unknown nature at present." @default.
