- W2055569578 abstract "Abstract Compression of the transected spinal cord below C7 excites sympathetic neurones to elicit a vasomotor response (SCVR) and compression of the sacral cord excites parasympathetic neurones to elicit an increase in intravesical pressure (UBR). These responses were reproducible enabling a study of the spinal autonomic effects of the peripheral neuromuscular blocking agents to be made. Localization of drugs in the segments of the spinal cord was achieved by intrathecal or closed intra-arterial injection of drugs. The sciatic gastrocnemius preparation served as control to detect any possible peripheral leakage. Chloralose anaesthesia was found more suitable than pentobarbital for the study of drug effect on the autonomic neurones. d -Tubocurarine and other non-depolarizing agents facilitated the SCVR and UBR, whereas decamethonium and other depolarizing agents inhibited these responses. There was, however, transient facilitation of the SCVR following the administration of the depolarizing agents. These effects were independent of their peripheral actions. Intrathecal acetylcholine initially facilitated then depressed the spinal autonomic responses and depressed the facilitation of these responses by d -tubocurarine. Atropinization enhanced the spinal autonomic effect of d -tubocurarine, whereas GABA (intrathecal) antagonized the effect of d -tubocurarine. It is concluded that the peripheral neuromuscular blocking agents have spinal autonomic effects similar to their effects on somatic motoneurones." @default.
