- W2055696022 abstract "DURING the course of investigations concerning the effect of cortisone upon lipid metabolism, it was observed that the color of the lipid extracts of the livers from cortisone treated rats were usually less yellow than their controls. Carotenoid pigments contribute color to the lipid solvent extracts of liver, and since β-carotene is the precursor of vitamin A, it was decided to investigate what effect, if any, cortisone might have upon vitamin A metabolism. The following experiments indicate that a relationship between the adrenal steroid cortisone and vitamin A metabolism does exist. A preliminary report concerning this work has been published (Clark and Colburn, 1953). experimental I. Cortisone and Vitamin A Levels in Normal Rats Twenty-four male Holtzman rats, weighing between 88–92 gm., were maintained on the stock diet used in our laboratoiy. Twelve of them received in addition equal daily doses of about 500–800 units of vitamin A." @default.
